A eye catching polychrome terracotta olla originating from the Chupícuaro culture of the Lake Cuitzeo basin and Lerma River valley in Guanajuato and Michoacán, West Mexico, dating to the Late Preclassic Period, circa 400–100 BCE. Hand-coiled and burnished, the vessel is formed with a pronounced, compressed globular body and rounded shoulder that tapers gracefully to a wide cylindrical neck terminating in an everted, flared rim. The surface is lavishly decorated in the classic Chupícuaro polychrome palette featuring rich iron-red, cream-buff, and dark chocolate-brown to black mineral slips. The vessel's shoulder and belly are organized into quadrant panels divided by vertical banded registers, framing complex stepped fret motifs, serrated zigzags, saw-tooth chevrons, and interlocking geometric elements emblematic of Chupícuaro cosmology. Concentric horizontal encircling bands encircle the upper shoulder and lower base register, framing the central field and emphasizing the vessel's swelling volume.
Size: 7-1/2 inches in height x 8 inches in maximum diameter (19.1 cm x 20.3 cm), the vessel survives in exceptional ancient condition, retaining strong burnish, crisp slip definitions, light scattered rootlet marks.
Provenance: Private Naples FL Collection J.B.
