Protoclassic Period, ca. 300 BC–AD 300
Hollow burnished pottery effigy vessel in the form of a standing dog, covered in red-brown slip. The body is plump and rounded, on four sturdy, outspread legs. The head is raised and turned slightly, with large pointed ears, applied ring eyes, a pointed snout and an incised grimacing mouth that bares a row of teeth. The tail is modelled as a tall, flared spout. Colima dog vessels were placed in shaft tombs, where the dog was probably thought to guide the dead on their journey to the afterlife. These were usually the native hairless xoloitzcuintli, which was also raised for food. The surface has fire clouding and darkening on the head, scattered black manganese dendrites and light root marks. Wear to the burnish, small chips at the extremities, and felt pads on the feet.
