West Mexico, Protoclassic, ca. 100 B.C. - A.D. 250

Hand-modeled from a buff-grey terracotta with remnants of warm reddish-orange slip, this charming effigy instrument represents an active ritual performer or dancer. The figure stands securely on stout, wide-set legs wearing an incised loincloth or wrap, with both arms raised dynamically forward to grasp small rounded rattles or percussion implements. The stylized head is characteristically animated, featuring prominent applied "coffee-bean" or pierced-pellet eyes, a sharp projecting beak-like nose, and pierced disk ear ornaments flanking a rounded cap or crest. Functioning as a ceremonial aerophone, the hollow internal chamber is fitted with a sound aperture/blowhole along the upper back and a finger hole at the top of the head to vary the pitch during performance. The surface exhibits an authentic, dry archaeological patina with heavy encrustation and manganese/mineral speckling throughout, surviving intact and can still whistle
