 Egypt, ca. 6th–8th Century AD

This is a charming and characteristic Coptic bone doll (sometimes called a "Coptic idol" or child's toy), carved from a section of long-bone — likely bovine — into a highly stylized standing female with prominent drilled circular eyes, a ridged nose, pursed mouth, squared shoulders and incised indication of the pubic triangle. The inked inventory number "339-G" on the head suggests prior collection cataloging.

These schematic bone figures appear abruptly in Egypt and the Levant around the time of the Arab conquest (7th c. AD) and continued into the Early Islamic/Coptic period, roughly 6th–10th century AD.

Functions include inexpensive children's toys, votive offerings, or fertility amulets associated with cults of local female deities; many have been excavated from graves.

Height: 2 in. (5 cm).    Old collection inventory '339-G' in ink to head.  Provenance: Private West Nyack, New York artist's collection
