Nigeria, mid–20th century

Tall, abstracted standing male figure carved from a single log with blocklike torso and legs, arms held close to the sides, and a planar face with projecting rectangular eyes, long angular nose, and open circular mouth. The figure wears a shallow brimmed cap, a textile skirt, and a braided belt and necklace from which hang numerous cowrie shells (Cypraea moneta), while an iron bush knife projects emphatically from the waist, emphasizing his role as a warrior guardian spirit. Inset mica disks form the shimmering eyes, heightening the sculpture’s otherworldly presence characteristic of Ijo (Ijaw) bush‑spirit shrine figures from the Niger Delta.

Such images, often called bush spirits or shrine guardians, were installed at outdoor altars to embody powerful beings from the forest and waterways, mediating between the human community and the dangerous, fertile wilderness on which they depended.

Height: 37 1/2 in (92.5 cm) including figure; plus custom base.

Condition: Weathered surface with encrusted patina and remnants of pigments and cloth; rusting and pitting to iron blade; expected age cracks, minor losses, and wear to shells and textile consistent with ritual exposure and long outdoor use.

Provenance: Allan Stone Collection, New York; Sotheby’s, New York, The Collection of Allan Stone: African, Oceanic and Indonesian Art – Volume One, 15 November 2013, lot 77.
