Middle Corinthian Ca. 650-600 BC

Greek Corinthian Pottery Alabastron (Tall Perfume/Oil Flask), Corinth, Peloponnese, Middle to Late Corinthian Period, ca. 600–570 BC. Wheel-thrown pale buff/cream Corinthian clay of tall elongated pear-shaped (piriform) body tapering to a rounded base, with a short cylindrical neck capped by a wide flat disc-shaped mouth decorated on top with black radiating patterns and dot border, pierced through the neck with a small single string-suspension hole (for carrying on a cord rather than a handle). The body is painted in brown-black and added purple-red slip with fine incised linework, showing a principal figural subject of a bird-bodied siren or long-necked bird with fully outstretched wings (wing feathers rendered in crisp parallel incised hatching with red infill), a second bird on the opposite side, and rosette filling ornament across the field; a tongue pattern at the shoulder. The disc mouth and neck retain an old paper collection label inscribed "7127" in red/orange ink. Size: 3⅜ in. (8.6 cm) H. Intact with typical paint abrasions and flaking to the figural field, mineral accretions, and losses to the black slip; chip to disc rim edge. Provenance: Mr. T.D. (Tony D.), Cannonville, Utah, acquired in the 1970s; earlier collection number 7127 inscribed on an old paper label to the mouth
