Guanacaste-Nicoya Region, ca. 1–500 A.D.

Finely carved and polished from translucent green jade, this celt-form pendant depicts a standing anthropomorphic figure with circular drilled eyes, a broad headband surmounted by stylized birds in profile, arms folded at the waist with incised fingers, and crossed legs, the limbs separated from the torso by characteristic string-cut perforations. A drilled perforation at the lower body would have served for suspension, the piece worn as a high-status pendant symbolizing rank and supernatural power in the jade-revering societies of northwest Costa Rica. Retaining a brilliant glassy polish and in excellent condition.

Height: 3½ in. (9 cm), plus custom mount.
