Greater Nicoya or Diquís / Greater Chiriquí cultural zone (Late Period V to Period VI Ca. 500 – 1000 CE ).

traditionally termed a "poison pot" in early trade nomenclature, features a boldly modeled anthropomorphic visage seamlessly integrated into its squat, wide-mouthed body. Hand-coiled from a dense, coarse-tempered clay, the vessel showcases prominent stylized facial anatomy, including large slit "coffee-bean" eyes beneath a heavy horizontal brow, a wide projecting nose with hollowed punctate nostrils, and perforated lateral ear lugs designed for cord suspension or feather attachments. Rather than holding toxins, miniature ritual containers of this type likely served as ceremonial receptacles for precious pigments like cinnabar, hallucinogenic snuff, or medicinal concoctions. The surface displays an earthy terracotta ground marked by mottled dark firing clouds, fine craquelure, and authentic burial encrustations that reflect centuries of soil contact.
