Apulia, South Italy, circa 4th Century BCDescription
An authentic ancient Daunian wheel-thrown bichrome pottery mug, originating from northern Apulia in Magna Graecia and dating to the late Classical to early Hellenistic Period, circa 4th century BC. Fashioned in a cylindrical tankard form with gently waisted walls, the vessel features an everted, horizontal flat-topped rim, a flat circular base, and a vertical strap loop handle applied to the upper wall. The exterior is coated in a warm cream-buff slip and encircled by alternating registers of dark brown, sepia, and reddish-umber painted bands. Encircling the upper body is a frieze of stylized ivy or laurel vine leaves rendered in quick, brush-stroke motifs, flanked above and below by concentric horizontal encircling lines and rim ticking that reflect indigenous Daunian geometric traditions adapting Greek Colonial ceramic styles.

Size 4 inches in height by 3-1/4 inches in rim diameter (10.2 cm x 8.3 cm),

The surfaces exhibit an attractive, uncleaned earthen burial patina with light, scattered mineralized soil encrustations and subtle age softening across the painted slip. Condition is largely intact with a discrete, well-stabilized antique rim repair noted along the flared lip, while the handle and base remain solid and stable. Provenance Ex Massachusetts Private Collection Comparative Literature: a related Daunian bichrome forms and banded decorative schemes in Margaret Ellen Mayo, The Art of South Italy: Vases from Magna Graecia, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 1982.
