Old Kingdom, 2686–2181 BC, the period of the great pyramid builders, when court women attached to royal households often held priestly titles.

Polished disc mirror with tang for insertion, engraved  in the name of Neb-Ka “the one known to the King, the Priestess of Hathor”.  Mirrors in this period were prestige toilette objects associated with light, beauty and rebirth; in the cult of Hathor—goddess of love, music, joy and the golden sunlight—polished metal discs evoked the dazzling sun disk!

Size 4-3/8 inches (10.7 cm.) Height + custom mount.
Intact. Smooth surface patina.

Provenance: JCT, Brussels Collection. Acquired from Dominique Thirion in 2017.

This rare inscribed Old Kingdom mirror not only preserves an elegant cosmetic tool but also records, by name and titles, a high status woman at court and priestess of Hathor, directly comparable to examples in major institutions.  Scholarship (Lilyquist and others) notes only a small corpus (c. 8–10 known) of mirrors inscribed “royal acquaintance, priestess of Hathor,” most in museum collections.  Also refer to: A. Wiese, Ägypten, Augenblicke der Ewigkeit, 132,46.  The Louvre Museum, E3307 and E4891 has two very similar inscriptions naming the owner (two other priestesses of Hathor known to the King) and dated to the Old Kingdom.

All pieces are unconditionally guaranteed authentic and as described in perpetuity and have been legally acquired and imported in full accordance with U.S. and applicable foreign regulations regarding the movement and sale of antiquities.

A signed guarantee of authenticity with a description and photograph of the item(s) accompanies this object.
