Third Intermediate–early Late Period, circa 800–500 BCE.

Depicted as a standing pregnant hippopotamus‑goddess with elongated snout, rounded belly and hanging breasts, arms at her sides, pierced horizontally behind the neck for suspension. Traces of blue‑green glaze with brown core visible in areas of loss. Lower legs and feet missing; surface with typical ancient pitting and burial incrustation.

Height 1 5/8 in (4.1 cm) excluding modern black wood base.


Taweret was a household protectress of pregnancy and childbirth, and small faience amulets like this were worn or kept in domestic shrines for apotropaic protection
