Second Intermediate Period, c. 1750–1550 BCE

Carved from steatite and pierced longitudinally for suspension or wear as an amuletic ring, this scarab features a stylized beetle back defined by grooved linear sutures demarcating the clypeus, head, prothorax, and wing cases, flanked by notched legs along the profile. The flat underside is deeply incised with a symmetrical, quadripartite geometric labyrinth design—a hallmark motif of the Second Intermediate Period (Dynasties 13–17 / Hyksos era). Divided along a cruciform axis, each quadrant displays nested angles paired with notched ladder bars, a talismanic pattern favored for its protective, apotropaic qualities and association with solar renewal. The piece displays a weathered, soft beige surface with remnants of its original glaze, authentic earthen encrustation in the deep recesses, and minor edge wear.
