Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, circa 525 to 30 BC

Possibly a sculptor’s model or votive head, carved in fine-grained limestone as the head of a priest wearing a smooth bag-shaped skullcap; the features well defined with almond-shaped eyes, naturalistic nose and fleshy lips. The back roughly finished and broken, suggesting use as a sculptor’s model or workshop piece.

Size:  2-5/8 in (6.7 cm) Height (head); overall height with socle 4-1/2 in (11.4 cm).  Minor chips and surface wear consistent with age; mounted on a modern wood socle with an old paper label to the underside, no 11.

Provenance: Property of a New York City collection. Acquired at Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, Antiquities sale, 11 December 1976, sale 3934, lot 297 (with original auction number sticker “3934” to the back of the head, lot string tag and old inventory label to underside of socle); copy of original invoice accompanies the piece.
