Egypt, Late Period, ca. 664–332 BC

A finely carved miniature stone head of a nobleman or official, the face framed by a striated bag wig. The features are sensitively rendered — a well-defined nose, ears, and mouth, with the eyes delineated by subtly raised relief lines — in the refined, naturalistic idiom of Late Period Egyptian portrait sculpture. An appealing object of fine style and intimate scale, presented on a custom display mount.

The Late Period saw a deliberate revival of earlier sculptural traditions, with sculptors producing crisply modeled, idealized heads of officials and dignitaries of exactly this type. The striated wig and carefully worked facial planes place this piece firmly within that distinguished tradition.

Dimensions: 1¾ in. (4.45 cm) high, plus custom mount

Condition: Abrasion and wear; damage to the nose and wig; light surface patina — consistent with age.
