Tanagra / Boeotian or Magna Graecia Tradition, Circa 5th–4th Century BCE

A molded terracotta votive figure depicting an enthroned or seated female deity, likely Persephone, Demeter, or Cybele. Modeled in a strict frontal, hieratic posture, she wears a high polos headdress or diadem draped with a veil (himation) that falls over the shoulders and across the lap. Her hands rest folded across the midriff in a traditional votive attitude. The reverse is unworked and features a prominent circular firing vent. Molded from a pale buff-tan earthenware with warm orange-buff areas, exhibiting encrustations, traces of original white slip/gesso ground, and earthen deposits consistent with burial. Mounted on a custom black matte display stand.

Broken and lost at the lower legs/feet and original throne base. Surface heavily weathered with softening to the facial features, minor stable hairline stress fissures around the firing hole, and loss of original polychrome, leaving remnants of white slip. Structurally sound..

Size 4-7/8 inches H. + custom base.
From the collection of pianist Professor Detlef Kraus (1919-2008), acquired in the 1960s to the early 1970s.
