Athens or South Italy, circa 5th to 4th century BC.

Of elegant, symmetrical form with deep rounded body, a tall, hollow stem foot  with reserve band.  The broad mouth is slightly everted with a rounded lip. Two high-swung, solid vertical handles spring from the upper body just below the rim and return to the shoulder in exaggerated, hook-like curves, creating a striking silhouetted profile characteristic of Classical kantharoi used for wine drinking.

The exterior glaze, originally intended as a uniform black, has fired to a mottled range of reddish-brown to black, with extensive surface weathering, root marks, and mineral accretions from burial that now articulate the vessel’s contours and emphasize its plastic volume.

Condition: Body with stable age crack and handle repair. No apparent restoration. The vessel stands upright and retains a pleasing, balanced profile, making it both a useful shape for typological comparison and an aesthetically satisfying example of plain Classical tableware in black-glazed technique.

Size 5 inches Height x 6 inches width handle to handle .

Provenance Mr. T.D., Cannonville, Utah Acq 1970s.
