Corinth, Peloponnese, Early to Middle Corinthian Period, ca. 620–580 BC.

Wheel-thrown pale buff Corinthian clay of spherical form, rising to a short cylindrical neck capped by the characteristic wide flat disc-shaped mouth (echinus lip) decorated on top with concentric black circles (a "target" or bullseye pattern), with a single vertical strap handle joining the mouth to the shoulder.

The body is painted in brown-black and added purple-red slip, with details rendered in fine incised linework, showing a large long-necked water bird (swan or siren-type bird) in profile walking with body extended, outlined wing with parallel incised hatching and purple red infill, amid a field of rosettes and dot clusters ("star/rosette filling ornament"). A secondary band of purple-red dots crosses the shoulder.

Size: 2⅝ × 2⅝ in. (ca. 6.7 cm). Intact with expected paint abrasions to the main figural field, one area of flaked slip near the shoulder, and mineral accretions.

Provenance: Mr. Tony D., Cannonville, Utah, acquired in the 1970s.
