Greek or Eastern Mediterranean figurine of the Hellenistic or early Roman period, circa 3rd century BCE–1st century CE.

A small terracotta head of a man wearing a rounded cap from a full figurine. The face is broadly modeled with fleshy cheeks, small eyes, and pursed lips, framed by the low, tiered cap that sits tightly over the brow. The back is broken away to the line of the neck.  Comparable cap‑wearing terracotta heads from Hellenistic contexts are known from Greek and Alexandrian workshops, where such small figures depicted everyday people, actors, or attendants.

Dimensions  Head: 1 3/8 in. H (3.5 cm);  Height including base: 2 1/4 in. H (5.7 cm)

Condition Terracotta fragment from a larger figure, broken at the neck and around the back of the head; small edge chips and minor surface abrasions consistent with burial and age. Warm brown surface with traces of encrustation and light earthen deposits; no obvious modern repaint. Securely mounted on a custom modern base, ready for display.

Provenance: Ex Mr. Sid Hart, Cos Cob, Connecticut, acquired in the 1990s from Royal Athena Galleries, New York; their original black and gold gallery label preserved on the underside of the base, inscribed in pen with inventory “PPQ12.”
