most probably Vishnu,  Circa late 18th to 19th century (c. 1780–1880)

A charming cast brass/bronze household shrine depicting a two-armed crowned Hindu deity, most probably Vishnu, Venugopala, or a folk Vishnu-Durga (Narayani), standing in a hieratic frontal pose on a stepped square pitha, with a small subsidiary figure (a consort, devotee, or child attendant) nestled at the deity's left side. The icon is backed by a separately cast arched prabhavali (backplate) surmounted by a stylized kirtimukha finial, which lifts cleanly off the base as originally intended for ritual bathing and seasonal worship.

The deity wears a tall conical kirita-mukuta, simple beaded ornaments, and a short dhoti; facial features are rendered in the bold, abstracted manner typical of Deccan/Karnataka village bronzes, with an elongated nose, incised brow, and almond eyes.

Dimensions  5 3/4" H x 4 3/4" W

Condition: Excellent antique condition with expected wear from ritual use; prabhavali detaches cleanly from the base as originally intended; rich untouched patina. The surface retains a warm golden patina with reddish cuprite bloom, pitted reverse casting, and traces of sindoor and ghee in the crevices — all consistent with long devotional use on a family altar.

Provenance: Antique Dealer from Khajurah, India, 2004 acquired by Dr. Henry Cherrick, a professor and dean at UCLA School of dentistry who pioneered government programs promoting dental care in HIV/AIDs patients. He was an avid collector of fine art and antiquities and died at the age of 84 in 2023.
