South India, 19th century AD

Carved in the round from a fine-grained white marble whose warm ochre encrustation across the base and lower folds attests to long ritual handling in a domestic or temple shrine. The god is shown in his composite Trimurti form, the union of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva as the ascetic guru Dattatreya, standing frontally with three crowned heads rising from a single neck and torso, hair dressed in the piled jata of a yogi, a beaded necklace resting against the chest, and a dhoti incised with fine parallel drapery folds gathered at the waist; his proper right hand rests lightly on the shoulder of Kamadhenu, the wish-granting cow, carved standing behind and beside him with her head turned outward, while a small calf crouches at her feet, together evoking the Vedic abundance and maternal earth-symbolism central to the deity's iconography. The carving sits on a low rectangular plinth, its surface worn smooth at the edges and pitted with small natural marble inclusions and iron-oxide staining consistent with age and handling rather than damage; the heads and facial features remain crisp and legible, with only minor abrasion to the crown tips and a stable hairline chip at one corner of the base, honest condition for a devotional image of this age. 
The three-headed Datta flanked by Kamadhenu and calf closely parallels devotional stone and metal sculptures of the deity in the Victoria and Albert Museum's Indian sculpture holdings, which preserve numerous 18th- and 19th-century South Asian devotional carvings of comparable domestic scale and material treatment.   Size   inches H.
