North India, ca. 10th–12th century AD

A finely carved sandstone stele depicting the Hindu god Vishnu standing in rigid frontal posture upon a lotus base. The deity wears a tall tiered crown, elaborate beaded necklaces, a broad jeweled girdle, and a finely incised dhoti. His principal attributes include the mace held in one raised hand, with the remaining hands originally holding the chakra, shankha, and padma,  the canonical four attributes of Vishnu. Behind the head is a pierced circular flaming halo framing the serene, meditative visage.

Vishnu is flanked by two carved pilasters with subsidiary deities and attendant figures in tiered registers, including a standing attendant above and devotee/donor figures at the base on each side, all rendered in the deeply undercut, richly ornamented idiom characteristic of medieval North Indian temple sculpture.

Dimensions 19.5 in. H (figure only); 25 in. H overall on custom wood base.
