West Mexico, Protoclassic, circa 100 B.C.–A.D. 250.

A hollow terracotta figure of an acrobat reclining on his hands with legs extended, the body slipped and burnished in rich red‑brown and tan with darker firing clouds on the lower legs. The elongated head shows a large pointed nose, wide open eyes, parted lips with teeth, and large disc ear ornaments, topped by a tight cap with segmented headband and high crest. Wearing a knee‑length skirt,

Size 8-1/4 in (21 cm) high, 8 in (20.3 cm) long, and 5 in (12.7 cm) wide. 

Minor surface wear and small chips to extremities, otherwise intact with attractive patina from age and burial.

This acrobatic figure most likely functioned as a ceremonial or tomb offering, celebrating performance, fertility, and status within ancient West Mexican society. It may have been placed in a shaft tomb as a lively companion for the deceased, embodying festive or ritual activities from life.

Provenance:    Private southwestern collection, ex. J.C. Levenson collection, 1950’s, a large portion of this collection was donated to The Vilcek Foundation, NYC.
