coastal Ecuador, ca. 350 B.C.E.–500 C.E.

Hand‑modeled terracotta roller stamp with deeply carved, continuous decoration composed of stacked mask‑like elements, each formed from concentric circular bosses with central perforations framed by curving, scroll‑like brows and almond‑shaped openings. The cylinder is pierced axially for a shaft and shows a warm brown surface with scattered mineral deposits and root marks, attesting to long burial. Such roller stamps were used with pigment and rolled over the skin, textiles, or other surfaces to create repeating bands of decoration, a practice well documented for the Jama‑Coaque of coastal Ecuador.  

Size: 4 in (10.2 cm) long x 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm) diameter. + custom mount. Pierced for suspension.    Nice deposits.
