Kuba peoples (Shoowa/Bushoong), Kasai region, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 20th century AD.

Raffia palm fiber, cut-pile and stem-stitch embroidery, natural and earth-dyed textile worked in an over all tight rhythmic interlocking geometric design of diamonds, meanders, and stepped lozenges in tan against dark brown, combining plush cut-pile fields with flat linear embroidery, the lower edge retaining a contrasting patterned border register. Float-mounted on a linen ground within a clear acrylic case for display and preservation.
This prestige/ceremonial textile was used for ceremonial dress panels, status display, dowry exchange, or funerary wrapping in Kuba society.
Textile mounted and framed in a plexiglass frame 28 in. W. x 30 in. H.
Condition: Excellent overall with rich pile and strong contrast; expected minor pile loss, fiber softening, and slight edge irregularity consistent with age and handmade production; frame not examined behind glazing. Backing shows original stretcher, wire hanger, and pencil layout marks from framing.

Provenance: Mr. Sid Hart, Cos Cob, Connecticut, acquired 1980s–1990s.
