Laos, Lan Xang/Luang Prabang tradition, circa 1800–1900

A gilt wood standing Buddha, carved in the Lan Xang tradition and posed in the distinctive Gandharattha, or "Calling for Rain," mudra unique to Laos, with both arms held straight at the sides and the long, tapering fingers pointing downward toward the earth. The figure is modeled with the elongated proportions, softly rounded shoulders, and serene, downcast expression characteristic of Lao Buddhist sculpture, the face framed by pendulous pierced earlobes and surmounted by a beaded ushnisha rising to a tall, flame-shaped finial. The monastic robe is indicated in shallow relief with a fishtail hem falling in a stepped point at the ankles, and the whole is finished in gilt over a red-brown lacquer ground, with the expected wear and loss to the gilding revealing the underlying lacquer and wood at the shoulders, drapery folds, and extremities — consistent with age, devotional handling, and old surface. The figure stands on its own integral rectangular plinth, further raised on a later black-painted wood display base.

Measuring 25 in. H on its base (63.5 cm).

This figure belongs to the same regional tradition of tall, attenuated Lao standing images represented by a related 19th-century Thai/Lao standing gilt figure in the Doris Duke Southeast Asian Art Collection at the Walters Art Museum (Object 54.3000), and compares in posture and gilt-lacquer technique to Lao "Calling for Rain" figures published and sold through specialist Southeast Asian dealers such as Vanishing Arts Gallery and Galerie Tjitra.
