Carved from a dense, mottled metamorphic hardstone, this substantial ritual vessel dates to the Formative period (c. 1500 BCE–200 CE) from the Guerrero region of southwestern Mexico.

 
Exemplifying the lapidary mastery and restraint of the Xochipala style, the vessel features thick, slightly flaring walls terminating in a rounded rim, tapering down to a wide, flat circular base. The dark olive-brown stone displays a weathered, variegated surface enriched by localized reddish-brown oxidation, minor tool marks, and light burial encrustations, particularly within the interior cavity where ancient mineral deposits remain visible along the lower basin.

Measuring 12.5 inches (31.75 cm) in diameter, 4.5 inches (11.43 cm) in height, and weighing a monumental 22 pounds (9.98 kg), large-scale ceremonial stone vessels of this scale required immense labor to hollow, abrade, and polish, serving as high-status prestige objects in elite funerary or ritual contexts. Condition: Intact and in remarkable ancient condition, exhibiting natural surface pitting, ancient micro-scratches, edge wear, and calcified burial patina consistent with age and authenticity.
