Panama, Gran Coclé, ca. 800–1200 AD

A handsome matched pair of pre-Columbian Coclé polychrome pottery vessels, each with a bulbous body rising to a tall, flaring neck. Both are painted over a cream ground with red and black banded necks, and each bears a wide shoulder register filled with the bold abstract whorl/scroll geometry characteristic of Gran Coclé ceramic art — a stylized vocabulary ultimately derived from avian and serpentine motifs. The near-identical decoration and scale make this an unusually well-matched pair. Both vessels retain strong mineral deposits and root marks consistent with long burial, attesting to their antiquity.

Dimensions: 12¾ in. and 13¼ in. high

Condition: Both intact and well-preserved; strong mineral/root deposits from burial
