Maya Polychrome Pottery Bowl

This exceptional Maya polychrome terracotta bowl hails from the Ulúa Valley region (Late Classic period, ca. 600–900 CE), showcasing the distinctive syncretic iconography and dynamic painting tradition of the southeastern Maya periphery.

Modeled with rounded, slightly tapering walls resting on a flat base, the exterior is richly composed in two primary visual registers executed in dark sepia-black and orange-red slips over a warm buff ground. The main lower register features three spirited black spider monkeys shown leaping and gesturing mid-stride with raised three-digit paws and characteristically curling tails, alternating with large circular sun or shield rosettes adorned with dotted and serrated outer rims. Above, a broad upper frieze depicts stylized horizontal anthropomorphic figures or monkey impersonators reclining or swimming amidst interlocking woven mat motifs (pop), symbolizing royal lineage and rulership. The vessel’s interior walls provide a captivating, airy counterpoint to the densely banded exterior, populated by four lively, dancing monkeys rendered in fluid red slip. Each interior figure is depicted in a dynamic crouch with elongated limbs and elaborate plumed body crests extending from their backs, framed by vertical feathered feather-bundle spacers and a neatly segmented rim. In ancient Maya belief, the monkey was deeply associated with the arts, scribal traditions, music, dance, and primordial mythic twin ancestors from the Popol Vuh, imbuing the vessel with both festive revelry and esoteric ceremonial meaning. 
Size: 7-1/2 inches in diameter x 4-1/2 inches high (19.1 cm diameter by 11.4 cm high), the bowl is in very fine ancient condition, presenting stable expected surface craquelure, natural mineral root marks, and light burial deposits typical of Ulúa Valley ceramics. The painted pigments remain remarkably crisp, fluid, and vibrant across both the interior and exterior registers.
