Late Classic Period,  Circa 600 to 900 AD

A pseudo hieroglyphic PSS band is incised under the rim as true hieroglyphic rim bands typically spell out the Primary Standard Sequence (PSS).  Here the looping scrolls, paired dot clusters, and infilled cartouches mimic the lu-bat "carved/incised" sign and day-sign-style elements that often appear in these dedicatory band.

On the body, the circular eye with a central pupil and a curled scroll descending from the mouth is the classic shorthand for a breath/speech scroll (ik' or sak ik'aal),  exhaled vital breath, soul, or song, one of the most common motifs in Maya iconography. The incised motif on the lower body reads as a stylized zoomorphic or deity face in profile, also a standard Late Classic subject. The hooked snout and paired scroll elements echo conventions used for supernatural creatures such as the Witz (mountain) monster, Cauac (storm) monster, or a serpent / saurian ancestor. These symbols indicate the scene occupies a mythological or otherworldly register rather than a naturalistic one.
