Mexico, Postclassic Period, ca. 1200–1500 A.D.

Red-slipped ceramic bowl raised on three elongated tripod supports, the interior painted in red, black, and white slip with a tightly organized geometric program: a central spiral medallion enclosed by angular stepped forms, concentric bands, segmented rim panels, dotted motifs, and dense linear hatching. The underside retains linear decoration at the base of each leg, and the vessel form belongs to the broader Postclassic Mixteca-Puebla ceramic tradition, a style that originated in Central Mexico and spread through much of Mesoamerica.

Size: 3-1/2 in. high x 8 in. diameter x 8 in. wide (8.9 x 20.3 x 20.3 cm).

Condition very good overall from the photographs, with surface wear, mineral accretions.

Provenance: Property of a National Insurance Company, purchased circa 1970.

Comparable institutional examples include a Mixtec tripod jar at Princeton dated 1200–1500, made of fine red ceramic with white and red slip, an ICOM-listed Mixtec tripod vessel dated 1300–1521, and a University of Miami Mixteca-Puebla tripod bowl measuring 14 x 29.2 x 28.9 cm.
