North Coast Peru, Moche III–V Phase, ca. AD 200–700.

Hand-hammered sheet copper, worked in deep repoussé from the reverse to raise an oval human face with prominent almond-shaped eyes beneath arched brows, a strong naturalistic protruding aquiline nose, parted lips revealing a bar of teeth, and softly modeled cheeks. Small suspension/attachment perforations along the perimeter (at the forehead, temples, chin and sides) indicate the mask was originally sewn or riveted to a textile backing or mummy bundle, and likely had separately-attached elements that are now lost. The outer surface preserves a rich, stable green cuprite and malachite patina with areas of deeper olive-brown; the verso retains what appears to be an old museum/collection paper label.

Size: 2½ × 3 in. (6.4 × 7.6 cm). + custom base.

Intact with natural edge losses and perforations typical of excavated Moche copper foil. Provenance: Ex Robert J. ("Bob") Stroessner (d. 1991) Collection, founding curator of Pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art at the Denver Art Museum
