northern coast of Peru, circa 100 BCE – 200 CE. The hollow ceramic body is composed of an interlocking openwork cluster of stylized chili peppers (Capsicum baccatum or Capsicum chinense, known locally as ají), arranged in radial tiers around a hollow central ring chamber. The vegetal forms radiate outward with sharp, pointed tips and lobed bulges, reflecting the early North Coast tradition of celebrating agricultural staples essential to ceremonial life and sustenance. Rising from the cluster is an archaic stirrup-spout handle with a thick, arched stirrup terminating in a short, wide, slightly flaring spout characteristic of the earliest Moche Phase I and antecedent Formative periods. Size 7 inches high by 6 3/4 inches wide.
