Northern coast of Peru, Early Intermediate Period, circa 100 to 500 AD. 
A lovely painted ceramic stirrup-spout effigy vessel sculpted in the form of a seated dignitary with handsome Andean facial features, wearing a rounded dome cap, circular ear ornaments (orejeras), and subtle cream and red-brown slip facial paint. The figure holds their arms tightly crossed over their chest, adorned with geometric step-fret pattern bands painted along the sleeves and sides of the tunic. He is carrying a painted and molded coca bag slung over his back around his neck on cords.  Attached to the back of the figure is a classic Moche stirrup handle terminating in a thick, upright vertical spout. Functionally, stirrup-spout vessels of this design were utilized as high-status ritual containers and funerary offerings (offrendas) placed inside elite tombs to accompany the deceased into the afterlife and denote social standing or ceremonial role. 

A comparable piece depicting a seated Moche figure with painted tunic details is preserved in the Art Institute of Chicago under reference number 1955.2285 (Stirrup-spout Vessel Depicting a Seated Man, Moche, c. 100–500 AD)
