North Coast of Peru, Early Intermediate Period, ca. 200–700 AD

An impressive stirrup‑spout vessel with bulbous body surmounted by a powerful monkey‑deity head. The rounded body rises to a tall neck and looped stirrup handle, from which projects an upright spout; the head is modeled with alert circular ears, bulging eyes, jutting nose, and a wide, tooth‑filled roaring mouth, all rendered in a rich red‑orange slip that contrasts with the buff and darker brown firing clouds of the body. A painted headband in red encircles the brow and crosses diagonally over the scalp, emphasizing the figure’s supernatural or ritual status. Surfaces show appealing burial patina, scattered mineral deposits, and light wear to the slip consistent with age.

Dimensions: 9.5 in (24.1 cm) H x 5 in (12.7 cm) W x 6.75 in (17.1 cm) D.
