Greek Aegean, Late Helladic III,  circa 1300 to 1200 B.C.

Of squat lentoid form on a low ring foot, with central false neck surmounted by a broad, double-arched handle and an off‑set true spout rising at one side, the whole made in a fine buff clay and decorated in dark reddish-brown paint with closely spaced horizontal bands encircling the body and shoulder, framed above by a frieze of opposed spirals and hooked motifs and with a bold concentric circle on the handle-bridge.

Surface with attractive burial patina, areas of encrustation and root marks, moderate abrasion and flaking of the painted decoration, small chips to rim and foot, underside with concentric painted circles and an old collection label.

These compact stirrup jars, used to contain perfumed oils and other precious liquids, are characteristic grave offerings and domestic containers of the Late Bronze Age Aegean, with closely comparable examples in the Walters Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and other major collections.

Size: 3 inches (7.6cm) high x 4 1/2 inches (11.4cm) wide.

Provenance Mr. Tony D., Cannonville, Utah, Acquired 1970s.
