Nayarit Ixtlan Del Rio Seated Female Figure

A striking Protoclassic West Mexican hollow earthenware sculpture (Nayarit, Ixtlán del Río style, ca. 100 BCE – 250 CE) depicts a kneeling female dignitary, expertly modeled with the distinctive stylized proportions and bold polychrome detailing characteristic of the region’s shaft tomb art. Supported stably on kneeling thighs and rear tripod-like foot projections, the figure presents a broad, rectangular torso with small modeled breasts, tapering arms folded inward with incised fingers resting against the ribs, and a tall, elongated neck. Her heart-shaped face is covered in a pale yellowish-buff slip, detailed with deep slit coffee-bean eyes, a prominent hooked nose with a modeled septum ring, an open horizontal mouth, and scalloped ears pierced for multiple ornaments. Rising above her high, sloping forehead is an elaborate tiered headdress or coiffure topped with a grooved, chimney-like finial wrapped in a beaded fillet.

The figure is richly ornamented with intricate resist and slip-painted designs against the deep reddish-brown terracotta body. A wide multi-strand beaded necklace of cream dots cascades down the center of her chest, flanked by painted armbands and wristlets. A horizontal cream band demarcates her lower body, which is decorated with negative-painted circular scrolls and dense dark manganese dioxide dendrites from centuries in a humid tomb environment. Rather than presenting an emerging infant, she assumes the classic formal pose of an elite female matriarch or ritual celebrant, personifying lineage authority, ancestral veneration, and female generative power in ancient Nayarit mortuary ideology.

Measuring 13.5 inches high by 7.125 inches wide by 4 inches deep (34.3 cm high by 18.1 cm wide by 10.2 cm deep), the sculpture survives in exceptional overall condition, exhibiting rich, uncleaned surface root tracking, natural mineral blooms, and crisp painted pigment throughout, free of modern repainting.
