South Coast Peru, Phase III- V, ca. 100 – 450 CE

A rare and fine polychrome ceramic vessel modeled in the form of a feline or bat effigy. The bulbous, round-bottomed bowl features a low relief nose and two small modeled lugs forming pointed ears protruding from the shoulder. The face is boldly painted in dark brown, cream, and reddish-tan slip, depicting wide, staring concentric eyes, arched brow markings, whiskers, and a rectangular mouth bearing prominent bared teeth in a grid-like pattern.

Dimensions: 3 ¾ inches (9.5 cm) Height x 5 ¼ inches (13.3 cm) Width.

Condition: Excellent intact condition with vibrant original slip pigments, smooth burnished surface, and light scattered surface abrasions consistent with age and ancient context.

Provenance: Collection of Kate Kemper, London.
