Persia, Nishapur, northeastern Iran, 10th century AD.

An earthenware bowl of conical form on a short foot,  buff body is coated in cream slip and painted in brownish-black slip with a rim band and descending vertical strokes, in the celebrated black-on-cream Nishapur tradition. Unglazed reddish exterior with visible throwing rings; ancient wear and surface deposits consistent with age.
Nishapur was one of the leading centers of fine ceramic production in the 10th–11th centuries, and slip-painted wares like this were tablewares that carried the visual prestige of calligraphy and pattern. The diluted-slip technique over a white ground was itself part of a broader effort by eastern Iranian potters to emulate the bright white surfaces of imported Chinese porcelain.
