Mexico, ca. 800–200 BCE.

This compelling pre-Columbian standing figure is carved from a fine white stone with distinctive blue-green veining, an attractive and comparatively uncommon material against the dark green diorite and serpentine more typically seen in Mezcala and Chontal sculpture. The figure stands in the classic frontal pose of the type, arms held close to the sides and knees slightly bent, with a gracefully tapered head and expressive, relief-carved facial features rendered in the spare, abstracting idiom that has made these works so admired by modern collectors and artists alike. Scattered surface deposits and remaining traces of red-orange pigment between the arms attest to its considerable age and ritual life, while the deep, softly polished surface lends it a quietly powerful sculptural presence.

At a substantial 7-1/2 inches, with its unusual veined stone, expressive carving, and impeccable mid-century provenance, this figure represents an exceptional opportunity for the discerning collector of ancient American art.

What elevates this example above the many smaller and less well-documented figures on the market is its distinguished provenance, formerly with Barry Kernerman of Toronto, and before that in the celebrated Samuel Dubiner collection of Tel Aviv, Israel, acquired in the 1960s. The Dubiner-Kernerman pedigree is a recognized and sought-after chain of ownership for Guerrero stone sculpture, and the documented 1960s acquisition places the work securely before the 1970 UNESCO Convention threshold—an increasingly decisive factor in both the salability and the long-term value of pre-Columbian antiquities today.

Standing figures of this form belong to the broader Mezcala/Chontal standing-figure tradition dated by major institutions from the Late Formative through the Preclassic, and comparable examples are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and have achieved strong results at auction, with the finest large figures realizing five-figure and even six-figure prices.
