Great Plains,  Circa 1890, A handsome pair of Cheyenne beaded hide moccasins, sinew‑sewn and fully beaded over the vamps in classic white‑ground Plains style, dating to circa 1890. Each moccasin is worked in tiny glass seed beads on native‑tanned hide with rawhide soles, featuring large central diamonds in blue, green, and yellow on a white field, flanked by smaller stepped diamond motifs and multicolored triangular panels at the toes and sides. Narrow white beaded lanes run up the heels, and the soft uppers retain their original ochre‑toned surface and hide ties; black cloth stuffing presently supports the forms for display.

Materials are native‑tanned hide, glass seed beads, sinew stitching and rawhide soles
Cheyenne moccasins of this period are admired for their densely beaded white grounds and bold diamond designs, which stand out strongly in both ethnographic and Western interiors. Pairs with good age, full bead coverage, and charitable‑sale provenance make strong “crossover” pieces for collectors of Native American art, Western material, and historic textiles.

Dimensions Lengths: 9 3/4 in (each)

Provenance Centers for Public Interest Law, the University of San Diego.

Condition  Overall very good condition for age and use. The beadwork is largely intact with only scattered small areas of loss and minor loose strands at the toes and edges. Hide shows expected wear, softening, and toning; soles with honest use wear and surface soiling consistent with period use. Some minor staining, scuffing, and edge wear to uppers; original ties present but fragile. Stuffing inserts are modern and for display only.

All pieces are unconditionally guaranteed authentic and as described in perpetuity and have been legally acquired and imported in full accordance with U.S. and applicable foreign regulations regarding the movement and sale of antiquities.
