Mexico, Guanajuato / Michoacán border region, ca. 500 – 100 BCE. Hand-modeled from buff terracotta, this solid flat figurine exemplifies the expressive votive effigies associated with the Preclassic Chupícuaro tradition. The piece features exaggerated applied oval eyes with horizontal pupils, a prominent projecting nose, an open mouth, and massive pierced ear ornaments. Rising above the brow is a tall, tabular headdress with traces of dark pigment. Her abbreviated arms rest across the chest above a prominent punctate navel and tapering legs. The reverse remains completely flat in the classic slab-built technique. Remains of original pigments.
Size: 4 inches H. + custom mount.
The vast majority of these solid, flat-backed pretty ladies were fashioned to accompany or protect an individual in the afterlife.
Provenance: Private Mercer Island WA collection by descent from Ruth Goldwyn Capps & Henry McClure Capps (known as Mac) who was an art director and production designer for TV & films in the mid-1950s.
