West Mexico, Shaft Tomb Culture, ca. 300 BC – 300 AD

A charming and rare West Mexican terracotta figurine from the shaft tomb tradition, depicting a musician seated on the ground and intensely engaged in playing an upright cylindrical drum. The figure features traditional expressive facial features with coffee-bean eyes, a prominent nose, and parted lips, wearing a thick layered collar necklace and a specialized conical headdress engineered as an ocarina whistle. The dark manganese-mottled reddish-brown clay exhibits an authentic aged surface texture, complete with scattered rootlet marks and mineral encrustations testifying to its ancient burial.
