Late Classsic Ca 600 to 900 AD. Molded in buff-orange earthenware with extensive fugitive pigments, this hand-finished hollow effigy depicts an elite noblewoman or ritual personage rendered as a freestanding, bell-shaped bust.

The facial treatment exhibits quintessential Maya elite aesthetics: narrow almond-shaped coffee-bean slit eyes framed by modeled lids, a prominently bridged nose extending into a broad brow ridge, full horizontal lips, and elongated ear ornaments flanking the cheeks. The head is crowned by a textured, stippled coiffure or beaded fillet headband framing the brow. Across the chest rests a large crisscross ceremonial necklace/collar centered by a raised, circular medallion or jadeite bead.

Significant traces of ritual cinnabar; red hematite pigment remain preserved across the facial features, arms, and headdress, contrasting with underlying remnants of Maya blue/whitish slip and extensive root-mark patination and calcified burial encrustations.

While often classified within the broad Jaina Island funerary tradition (Late Classic Phase I/II), many of these hollow bell-base and half-length molded figures were produced in provincial ceramic workshops along the Usumacinta River drainage and Gulf Coast lowlands (Jonuta/Palenque sphere) for elite mortuary rites and votive offerings. They frequently incorporated an internal acoustic chamber or rear whistle vent, functioning as musical instruments during funerary rituals to accompany the deceased through the underworld (Xibalba).
