Guerrero Mixtec, Mexico, ca. 300 BC–AD 1500

Small carved figure of translucent pale green and cream stone with brown and olive inclusions, perhaps serpentine or a jadeite-like greenstone. The figure is shown seated or crouching, in compact, block-like form. The head is squared with a flat top, the face simplified, the mouth a cut slit, and there are flange-like ears or ear ornaments at the sides. The arms are bent with the hands resting on the knees. The legs are separated by a straight groove that looks string-sawn, and the feet are marked by short incisions. Probably an amulet or personal ritual figure. There are earthen deposits in the recesses, a small dark green spot on the nose, and light wear. Mounted on a black wooden base.

Size: 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) H. x ¾ inch (1.9 cm) W. x ½ inch (1.3 cm) D. + custom base.
