South Coast Peru, Early Intermediate Period, ca. 100–450 CE.

A finely modeled polychrome pottery effigy vessel in the form of a crouching animal,  sculpted with an elongated, rounded body raised on four short conical feet, a short cylindrical pouring spout at the back, an alert upturned head with pointed ears, a modeled muzzle with bared teeth, and a long black-tipped tapering tail.

The vessel is slip-painted in the warm Nazca palette of orange-ochre, cream, and black over a lustrous burnished surface. Fine black whisker lines radiate from the muzzle, framed by rounded eyes, while a bold black band runs along the spine and tail — the economical, confident brushwork characteristic of Nazca animal effigies. The feline held deep symbolic importance in Nazca cosmology, associated with fertility, water, and shamanic power, and recurs throughout the culture's celebrated polychrome ceramic tradition.
