ca. 4th Century AD

Cast bronze crossbow brooch (Zwiebelknopffibel) with three onion-shaped knobs, one at the centre and one at each end of the crossbar. The bow is deep and faceted, with a moulded collar where it joins a long, narrow rectangular foot. The foot is decorated on top with pairs of stamped ring-and-dot motifs, and underneath it has an integral tubular catch. The bronze pin is still in place and sits in the catch. Worn on the shoulder to fasten a cloak. In the later Roman Empire this type of brooch marked military and civil officials. There is a dark brown to grey patina with reddish cuprite and green corrosion on the pin, small spots of red residue on the side of the foot, and light wear to the knobs and foot edges. Intact.
