Roman Egypt, ca. 1st–3rd Century AD

Small cast bronze amulet in the form of a finger ring or a loop hole talisman. A plain round hoop supports a long horizontal bezel shaped as a phallus, with the testicles shown at one end and a rounded tip at the other. Worn on the finger or hung as an amulet, the phallus being a common protective charm against the evil eye and misfortune, and a symbol of fertility. There is an orange-brown surface with dark patches and areas of encrustation, and the hoop is worn thin in places.

Size: 3 cm (1 ¼ inches) L. x 1.5 cm (⅝ inch) H.
