Eastern Mediterranean, ca. 1st Century CE

A free-blown (or mold-blown) translucent cobalt-blue glass bottle with a globular ribbed body, slender cylindrical neck, and outward-flared disc rim. The body is articulated by a series of vertical pinched or molded ribs creating a "melon" profile — a desirable feature on small Roman perfume and unguent flasks of this type. The exterior retains a wonderful surface with silvery and rainbow iridescent patina, earthen deposits, and rich cobalt saturation where the glass is thickest at the ribs. Small ribbed unguentaria of this form correspond broadly to Isings Form 26/28 and were used to hold perfumed oils, cosmetics, and unguents, frequently deposited in burials.

Dimensions: 2¾ in. H (approx. 7 cm)
Condition: Very good, intact; lovely iridescent patina and stable surface deposits. A nice example.

Provenance  Ex collection of Daryl G. Kulok, a New York private collector, acquired in the 2000s. The Kulok collection is recognized in the New York ancient-art community for its holdings of Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern glass and small antiquities, assembled over decades with an emphasis on intact and well-patinated vessels; objects from the collection have surfaced through reputable secondary-market channels with established pre-2000 and early-2000s collection history, predating the most recent round of cultural-property restrictions.

All pieces are unconditionally guaranteed authentic and as described in perpetuity and have been legally acquired and imported in full accordance with U.S. and applicable foreign regulations regarding the movement and sale of antiquities.

A signed guarantee of authenticity with a description and photograph of the item(s) accompanies this object.
