Eastern Mediterranean Circa 1st to 3rd century AD

Carved in the round with luxuriant, deeply drilled curls framing the entire cranium and swept up into a small central topknot or crest above the forehead. The hair is organized in radiating locks from the crown, divided by a narrow central parting band that continues down the back of the head and terminates above the nape, the individual strands rendered in tight, S‑shaped waves with drilled centers to create strong light‑and‑shadow effects typical of Late Hellenistic and early Imperial work. Traces of red pigment remain caught in the recesses of the hair and eyes, indicating that the sculpture was originally polychromed.

The face suggests a decorative figure of Eros or a young Dionysos rather than a formal portrait. The underside of the neck is roughly finished and flat from ancient breakage at the bust line, while the top preserves a circular dowel hole for attachment, implying that the head belonged to a larger composite statuette or relief ensemble. The marble has a fine, creamy patina with scattered surface incrustations and minor pitting, consistent with age and long burial.

Size H 4.25" x W 3.5" x D 3.75"; Size   9" Height on base.

Condition: Head with old surface, few moderate nicks, original iron pin visible atop, for an attachment at back of head.
