Guerrero, Late Preclassic (Formative) Period, ca. 500–200 BCE

A finely modeled solid-pottery standing female of the San Jerónimo type, named after the type-site region around modern San Jerónimo, Guerrero, in West Mexico. The figure is frontally posed with a large rectangular plaque-like head surmounted by an elaborate fillet/turban headdress rising to a vertical fan-shaped crest flanked by two coiled, horizontally banded rolls above the temples. Almond-shaped, perforated "coffee-bean" eyes flank a prominent nose, and the open mouth reveals modeled teeth; applied disc ear-spools frame the face. Arms are flexed with hands placed to the abdomen — the characteristic San Jerónimo maternal/fertility gesture — while openwork piercings at the torso and between the short, columnar legs lighten the solid clay body. A finely incised zigzag pattern decorates the skirt, and the figure retains overall remains of its original slip-painted decoration.
Size 6-1/4 inches (15.8cm) H. + custom mount
San Jerónimo terracottas belong to the Late Preclassic village cultures of Guerrero, contemporary with and stylistically independent of Olmec and early Central Highland traditions.
